Vollie Profile - Thelma Wood

Thelma Wood

Entally Estate Volunteer

Thelma Wood seems like a part of the furniture at Entally Estate, being a volunteer here for almost 12 years. After her husband Jack passed away in 2008, and all her children had grown up and moved away, Thelma wanted a social outlet. Being a local Hadspen resident, Thelma and Jack had been to Entally’s Gardenfest previously, so she was familiar with the property and its historical significance.

It was in 2009 at Gardenfest, when Thelma was making conversation with the House guide, that she was asked to volunteer at the Estate. Volunteering was something Thelma had never considered, but idea of having a weekly outing and a local social group was appealing.

In February 2010, Thelma started as a House guide at Entally, quickly making friends with the other volunteers, and relishing the chance to chat to people from all over the world. When asked what the highlight of her volunteering experience so far has been, Thelma says she loves being able to bond with like-minded history buffs, from all corners of the globe. Even the school groups are a joy for Thelma, being able to pass on her knowledge of colonial life to young, eager minds.

Every Wednesday, Thelma pops over the river to the Estate, bringing a delicious homemade cake with her as a treat to the other volunteers. She then gives a history talk to everyone who comes though – her mild manner hiding a wicked sense of humour.

For those thinking of volunteering – whether it is in the House or gardens – Thelma says you will feel a great sense of satisfaction and will make lifelong friends.

EDIT: Thelma Wood passed away at home on Monday 1st March 2022. She will be sorely missed by all at Entally.
